Sam Bradford sharp vs. Patriots, but Rams lose WR Donnie Avery

Bouyed by a strong first half from quarterback Sam Bradford(notes), the St. Louis Rams also took what could be a key loss late in the first half against the New England Patriots. Donnie Avery(notes), expected to be the Rams' top wide receiver, left Thursday's cheap nfl jerseys exhibition with what appeared to be a serious right knee injury.

Bradford made his first start in three exhibitions, replacing A.J. Feeley(notes) in that role. Feeley missed the game with a sprained thumb. Based on the way Bradford played, he may stay in the starting lineup for a while, SN correspondent Jim Thomas reports. Bradford drove the Rams to a touchdown on their opening drive and threw two touchdown passes to rookie tight end Michael Hoomanawanui(notes). He finished the night 11-of-15 for 189 yards, with a passer rating of 125.0.
Bradford was 12-of-27 in his first two preseason games. Thursday, he looked sharp and decisive against the Patriots, standing firm in the pocket and displaying his quick release.
The Rams won 36-35 on a Josh Brown(notes) 37-yard field goal on the game's final play.
With Feeley out, coach Steve Spagnuolo went with undrafted rookie Thaddeus Lewis(notes) of Duke to start the third quarter.
Avery caught two passes for 47 yards and was Bradford's downfield threat. However, late in the second quarter Avery went down hard trying to catch a deep pass from Bradford.
"Donnie probably has a significant knee injury," coach Steve nfl Saints jersey Spagnuolo told reporters after the game, according to Thomas. "We'll know a little bit more after we get the tests (on Sunday). He was a little bit down, and rightfully so. Hopefully, it's not as bad as we think."
NBCSports.com described the situation:
"Avery's knee buckled, and he immediately reached for it in pain once he hit the ground. He was down for several minutes. Avery was carted off."
There was no immediate information on the extent of Avery's injury.
Before Avery was carted off the field, Patriots wide receiver Wes Welker(notes) went over and extended his hand. Welker is playing again after having surgery for a torn ligament in his left knee in February.
Avery, a second-round pick from Houston in 2008, had 53 receptions as a rookie and started 28 games in his first two seasons.
Bradford zipped passes between and over a porous Patriots defense. He was 4-of-4 for 48 yards, ending with a five-yard touchdown pass to Hoomanawanui on his first series. On his third possession, Bradford was 3-of- 4 for 48 yards, setting up a 25-yard field goal for a 10-7 lead.
And on his fourth series, he hit Hoomanawanui for a 12-yard score and a 17-7 lead.
Lewis led a 15-play, 76-yard march on the first series of nfl football jersey the third quarter. It lasted 9 minutes, 19 seconds and ended with a 20-yard scoring pass to Brandon Gibson(notes).
